Do you have a favorite make-up movie? My all time favorite for make-up is Beetlejuice!
The only way to get good at make-up and special effects is to try and practice.
Here is an exercise to show the basics of shadowing and highlighting, start with a simple sketch ( a house, tree or flower) then with chalk or colored pencils shadow with a dark color just outside the lines on only the right or left side of the picture, then on the opposite side highlight just inside the lines. The highlighted side should look bigger and/or move toward you and the shadowed side should look smaller or move away.
When you move on to practicing with make-up check out Kevin Aucoin's books and work!
